Where did the idea of this film come from?
This film is based on how Paralympic gold medalist Mr. Murlikant Petkar faced many difficulties one after the other in his life. Despite his exemplary achievements in sports, such a great talent has been forgotten. When the film’s producer, director and writer Mr. Kabir Khan first came to know about Petkar’s achievements, it was difficult for him to believe that such a personality exists in front of us in real life. Then he decided to bring his real life to the world by bringing it on the silver screen.

The story of the Real Chandu Champion i.e. Murlikant Petkar

Murlikant Petkar gave India its first Paralympic gold medal in 50m freestyle swimming held in Heidelberg, Germany in 1972. At that time, he had set a world record for crossing water in 37.33 seconds. His career began in the Boys Battalion of the Indian Army. He also reached the battlefields of Pakistan in 1965. During the war, he had gone out for tea when the whistle blew to signal an air strike. He tried to go back to his room, but the firing had already started. When his Indian Army camps were fired upon by Pakistani troops, he received several fatal bullet wounds and was badly crushed by army vehicles. The unfortunate incident left him paralyzed for life. He still has a bullet in his spine.
But much before joining the army, he was an avid participant in several sports, specializing in boxing. He also won the national title in boxing in 1965. An injury once affected his life and he had to give up boxing. Facing the challenges life threw at him, Petkar used all the available resources to train in the sport and achieve glory through it.
Swimming gave a new twist and meaning to my life. I worked hard and participated in the Paralympics after performing well at the national level, he says. During his stint in the Army, he also became a state champion in table tennis, javelin throw, shot put, discus throw and archery.
He continued to work hard as he wanted to prove that we are capable of representing the country and winning medals.
He always believed in himself. Muralikant participated in the 1968 Paralympics and reached the finals of javelin throw and slalom racing, winning a gold medal at the 1972 Games. He also won a gold medal at the 1970 Commonwealth Paraplegic Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. His efforts were finally recognised in 2018, when he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
